Quantum in focus as GESDA briefs OSCE states on science anticipation

On 21 and 22 October 2026, GESDA was invited to Vienna to brief member states and representatives of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) on science anticipation, focusing on developments in quantum technologies.

Mira Wolf-Bauwens, GESDA Head of Initiatives Development, provided briefings at the Residency of the Ambassador to Slovenia, and at the OSCE Headquarters. The visit was organized in collaboration with the Swiss Mission to the OSCE as part of Switzerland’s 2026 OSCE Chairpersonship, supporting one of its five key priorities: Anticipating technologies for a safe and humane future.

“Anticipation is not a contradiction from attention to current matters. It helps ensure that the security being defended today is not quietly lost tomorrow. The question is not whether the OSCE can afford to look ahead in such times, but rather whether it can afford not to,” said Mira Wolf-Bauwens.

Throughout 2026, GESDA has contributed scientific expertise and insights from the GESDA Science Breakthrough Radar to help advance Switzerland’s priorities for its OSCE Chairpersonship. Contributions have included an address by GESDA Board member Michael Hengartner to the OSCE Economic and Environmental Committee, and GESDA Director General Marilyne Andersen’s participation in the OSCE Conference in Geneva and the 32nd OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum in Prague.
