Imagine that it’s 2048: a fungal pandemic has swept through the human population, the era of biological quantum computing has begun, human germline editing is mainstream, large-scale CO2 capture and utilisation is the norm, the Moon is being mined for minerals, identity thieves target AI-enhanced humans, and rabies is eliminated. The underlying scientific breakthroughs of such possible future developments are already cooking in research labs around the world today, which is why anticipation matters if we are to use the future to build the present.
Back in 2023, the geopolitical stakes of science and diplomacy remain top of mind for many of us. With a more challenging environment for collaboration and scientific breakthroughs more rapid and sometimes destabilising, there is an even greater need to create opportunities for joint action towards a common multilateral agenda.
The 2023 GESDA Summit will take place from 11-13 October in Geneva, Switzerland. The Summit will be the first event to take place at the CERN Science Gateway, CERN’s flagship project for education and outreach, which will open this autumn. The Summit will bring together 1000 global participants from science, diplomacy, business and civil society.
